QUEEN OF THE MIST tells the story of Annie Edson Taylor, the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Combining archival footage with impressionistic re-enactment, the story is narrated by Joan Murray, author of the poems on which the video is based. Taylor was a 63 year-old teacher facing unemployment and poverty when, in 1901, she decided to take up P.T.Barnum's challenge and send herself over the Falls as her one hope to achieve fame and fortune. Instead, she was ignored and derided, robbed and abandoned by her managers, impersonated by an actress, and eclipsed by Bobby Leach (the first man to go over Niagara Falls -- ten years after her feat). She died in poverty at the age of 83. Mary Foskett plays Annie Edson Taylor.
